Understanding breast reconstruction
Breast reconstruction is surgery to rebuild the shape and appearance of the breast after mastectomy, lumpectomy, or in cases of congenital breast absence. It is a deeply personal decision and can be approached in many different ways, with no single right answer.
The two main approaches are implant-based reconstruction, which uses tissue expanders and/or implants, and autologous reconstruction, which uses tissue from another part of your body such as the abdomen (DIEP flap), back (latissimus dorsi flap), or thigh. Some patients combine both approaches. Reconstruction can be performed at the time of mastectomy (immediate) or months to years later (delayed).
Breast reconstruction is largely covered under Medicare item numbers for medically necessary cases. Private health insurance typically contributes significantly. Because reconstruction is medical in nature, the conversation is different to purely cosmetic surgery. Choosing a surgeon with specific reconstructive experience is particularly important.
What to expect after surgery
Hospital stay with close monitoring, particularly for flap procedures. Pain managed with prescribed medication. Drains in place.
Discharge home for most patients. Drains may still be in place. Rest and gentle movement encouraged.
First post-operative appointment. Drains removed. Light activity around the house. Many patients still feel fatigued.
Energy gradually returns. Some return to desk-based work depending on technique. Still avoiding lifting and stretching.
Most activity restrictions lifted with surgeon approval. Gradual return to exercise.
Final shape settles. Secondary procedures such as nipple reconstruction or fat grafting may be scheduled.
