What is botox?

Botox is a type of cosmetic and medical injectable that’s used to relax muscles across the body. When applied to facial muscles as a cosmetic treatment, botox injectables have the effect of loosening the lines on the patient’s face, creating a firmer, younger look.

Typically, botox procedures don’t last longer than twenty minutes, with minimal pain and side effects following botox treatments for most patients. In most cases, patients can expect some numbness and redness on the treated area post-application, as well as a little pain and possibly some eye drooping for facial botox applications. In the vast majority of cases, however, there are no serious, long-term effects from botox injectables if they’re administered safely and correctly. You can read more about the pain and other potential side effects you may experience following your botox application in our Botox Injectables FAQ.

The effects of botox last between three and six months, which makes botox injectables the perfect cosmetic treatment for any patients looking for a non-permanent procedure that still provides lasting results.

Botox vs. dermal fillers: what’s the right treatment for you?

There are some key differences that you need to keep in mind when determining whether botox injectables or dermal fillers are the right cosmetic treatment for your needs. For starters, botox cosmetic treatments are administered via an intramuscular injection, whilst dermal fillers are administered directly into the skin. This means that botox injectables are better for targeting dynamic wrinkles that are caused by muscle movements, whereas dermal fillers are better for correcting static wrinkles, which are natural lines or creases in the skin that are present while all facial muscles are relaxed.

Here are some other key differences between botox and dermal fillers:

Botox Injectables

  • Uses botulinum neurotoxins to relax muscles
  • Are administered via intramuscular injection
  • Targets dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle movements

Dermal Fillers

  • Uses collagen and hyaluronic acid
  • Are administered directly into the skin
  • Targets static wrinkles that appear superficially and as a result of natural skin ageing

Botox (Injectables) FAQs.

Botox costs depend largely on the type and extent of treatment you’re receiving.

In most cases, botox treatments cause little to no pain. When you get a treatment, your surgeon will inject botox into specific facial muscles in order to achieve the effect you’re looking for. Numbing cream is applied prior to the application of botox, however you may still feel a sharp or light stinging sensation that’s been described as feeling similar to an insect bite.

In the hours that follow your botox application, it’s completely normal to experience a duller sort of pain in the area that received the injection, as well as some bruising, numbness and swelling. If the pain lasts for much longer or is unbearable, seek medical attention.

While there isn’t a defined ‘best age’ for botox treatment, most experts agree that treatment produces the best results and the fewest side effects between your 20s and 50s, with the sweet spot being your late 20s and early 30s. Botox treatments aren’t recommended to patients under the age of 18 as there are typically minimal discernible results for patients in younger age brackets.

Medicare in Australia does not cover the cost of botox when used for cosmetic purposes, as these are not deemed medically necessary. However, the use of botox, or the botulinum toxin, may be covered if it is being used to correct or alleviate the symptoms of medical conditions (i.e. migraines, hyperhidrosis, etc.), provided that the procedure falls under certain requirements.

While botox is a fantastic solution to cosmetic problems for many people, some patients may not be considered an ideal candidate based on their medical history. These include:

    • Patients with asthma
    • Patients who have experienced severe allergic reactions to foods/medication
    • Anyone who has ever had an anaphylactic shock
    • Patients who have experienced keloid scarring
    • Anyone with a history of skin swelling or inflammation
    • Pregnant women
    • Children (patients that are 18 and under)

It’s imperative that patients choose a certified clinician who’s equipped with all the necessary experience to provide you with services that are tailored to your particular healthcare needs.

In most cases, a botox injection that’s administered around a patient’s eye won’t pose any long-term risks to your vision. Immediately after your botox procedure, you may experience symptoms like drooping eyelids, dry eyes and blurred vision. However, you can expect these to clear up over the next two or three days. In the meantime, you can take measures like lubricating your eyes and avoiding direct sunlight to minimise your symptoms.

Of course, no surgery comes without risks. If you do experience serious visual impairment, or if your symptoms last an unusually long time, it’s best to get yourself checked by a doctor.

Botox applications typically only take around twenty minutes to complete, not including time for your preoperative consultation and any post-op observations. As botox applications are generally considered to be an outpatient procedure, however, patients can expect to spend less than 2 hours at their botox clinic for both their procedure as well as their post-op observation.

The duration of your procedure and post-op observations will also be dependent on the scope of your botox treatment and whether any unforeseen complications occur during the treatment.

Before you leave the clinic, you should get a good idea from your botox specialist on what side effects you can expect and how long they’ll last. For the next few days, you should be extra-observant of how you’re feeling. If any of your symptoms feel usually severe, get medical attention.

There are also some specific tips you’ll need to follow in order to avoid complications. Some of the key tips your botox specialist may provide are as follows:

    • Not to lie down for at least an hour after your botox application in order to avoid the botox spreading to other areas of your face
    • Avoid situations that increase your blood pressure for at least four hours: this means no hot baths or saunas.
    • Keep the area that was operated on clean
    • No rubbing or scratching site of botox applications

For deep botox injections, normally for medical conditions, you might experience faintness and dizziness after your procedure. If you can, have someone accompany you to the surgery in order to drive you home. If possible, take the rest of the day off, and use paracetamol to relieve any mild pain.

Before your consultation, the first thing you’ll want to do is to make sure the clinic and specialist you’re visiting are certified. You can do this by checking out their website, as well as by giving them a call, or simply by booking your botox consultation through Pirk.

As previously mentioned, botox procedures are relatively simple, just so long as you’re well-prepared and are equipped with a strong understanding of the goals you’d ideally like to attain from your botox treatment.

Your botox specialist would have developed a clear understanding of where the botox injectables will need to be applied to support you attaining the results you’re looking for. The needles used for botox applications are very small, but you may still feel a small prick at the application site.

After your procedure, you may also notice small red spots where the botox was applied. These will fade away within a few hours post-procedure.

While botox procedures are safe in the vast majority of cases, no surgery comes without risks. These are some side effects you might experience:

    • Swelling and/or bruising
    • Numbness and/or pain in the affected area
    • Redness
    • Headaches
    • Drooping eyelids, dry eyes, blurred vision and other visual side effects
    • Nausea

While extremely rare, more serious conditions like skin infections and severe visual impairment have occurred in the past. Get immediate medical attention if you’re affected.

Botox treatments work best if regularly maintained over time. This is because botox eventually breaks down, and the cosmetic or medical effects you’ve received from the treatment fade away. Talk to your botox specialist about how often you’ll need to get botox injections administered. Typically, effects last for about three to six months.

You’ll begin to see results after about two weeks. You can also expect the results of your botox application to last somewhere between three and six months, after which you may need to schedule another session if you want to maintain the results.

In most cases, there are no long-term complications of stopping botox treatment. You may lose some or all of the cosmetic effects you received from your botox application. This is because the botulinum toxins used in botox injections are broken down over time and disposed of by your body as amino acids.

Botox is not the only cosmetic injectable on the market. For instance, there are a whole host of dermal fillers out there if you’re looking to firm up your skin and get rid of wrinkles. These include collagen, hydraulic acid, hyaluronan, polylactic acid, polyacrylamide and fat injections.

Each of these is best for different situations, so speaking with our Pirk Cosmetic Consultants in your Discovery Call and consulting with the botox specialist we’ll pair you up with can help you find the right botox treatment for your cosmetic and healthcare needs.
