The 3 Different Types of Breast Procedures

There are generally considered to be three different types of breast augmentation procedures, depending on how a patient is looking to augment their breasts. These three different types of breast augmentation procedures are:

1. Breast reductions

Breast augmentation surgery is different to breast reduction surgery, which contrastingly involves removing excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts in order to reduce the size of breasts. Learn more about Breast Reductions here.

2. Breast lifts

Breast augmentation procedures aren’t performed to correct drooping or sagging breasts. If a patient is looking to correct drooping or sagging breast tissue, then a breast augmentation specialist is likely to recommend that they secure a breast lift instead. The two procedures may also, however, be done together to both lift sagging breast tissue, and alter the size or shape of breasts. To learn more about breast lift, contact Pirk at 1300 114 426.

3. Breast augmentations

Although breast augmentation procedures aren’t conducted to reduce or lift breasts, by evening our asymmetry or uneven breasts, your breast augmentation can provide relief from neck, back, and shoulder strain. In this regard, breast augmentation procedures can improve quality of life for patients alongside boosting self-confidence.

Breast augmentation may, however, affect a patient’s ability to breastfeed, alongside other complications. As a result, patients are required to schedule preliminary consultations with a licensed medical practitioner prior to scheduling a breast augmentation surgery. This consultation is just to ensure that a breast augmentation is the right treatment for you and will be able to deliver the medical and/or cosmetic results that you’re looking for.

As breast augmentation is a surgical procedure, it should only be performed in Australia by qualified surgeons and only in clinics and facilities that are registered with state health departments.

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Also referred to as an augmentation mammoplasty, a breast augmentation is a type of cosmetic or reconstructive surgical procedure that typically involves positioning implants under the breast tissue or breast muscles to visually enhance the size of breasts.

Breast augmentation procedures are generally beneficial for:

  • Correcting asymmetrical or uneven breasts
  • Restoring breast size following periods of rapid weight loss, and pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Reconstructing breasts following mastectomies or other medical procedures

Breast implants are the physical implants (typically made with saline or silicon) which are positioned during a breast augmentation procedure. Not all breast augmentations may involve positioning breast implants.

Breast augmentation surgeries typically only take up to 90 minutes, with most procedures performed as day-surgery.

Bruising, swelling, and general pain and discomfort are all reported by most patients immediately following a breast augmentation procedure. As a result, your surgeon will recommend that you refrain from practising strenuous activities like intense exercise during your recovery period. As breast augmentation has also been known to complicate breastfeeding, the procedure typically isn’t recommended for women who are looking to fall pregnant in the near future.

On average, patients recovering from a breast augmentation procedure can typically expect all symptoms to alleviate between 4-6 weeks following surgery. If symptoms persist after 6 weeks, it’s best to consult with your surgeon.

Prior to your preliminary consultation, it’s recommended that you research breast augmentation procedures, breast implants, and determine what your ideal results and/or expectations are if you were to schedule a breast augmentation for yourself. Our Pirk cosmetic consultant will also provide you with a list of questions to ask your surgeons during your first consultation, as well as on the day of your procedure, and even post-surgery.

A typical breast augmentation procedure takes around 60-90 minutes and will be performed whilst a patient is under general anaesthetic. Most patients can expect to go home on the same day but in some cases, patients may stay in a facility or clinic overnight for monitoring symptoms or side effects.

Some of the most common risks or complications of breast augmentation include nausea or vomiting caused by anaesthesia, as well as bleeding, wrinkling of breast skin, changes to breast sensation, and temporary or even permanent numbness. Other more adverse risks include allergic reactions to wound tape, pain medications, or topical lotions/ointments, keloid scars, implant rupture, implants moving out of position (i.e. double bubble deformities), granulomas or lumps formed by leaking silicon implants, and even blood clots.

Other associated risks include double bubble breast implants and complications post-surgery.

There is evidence to suggest that your risk of experiencing complications from breast implants increases 8-10 years following your surgery. Because of this, most specialists recommend that patients replace one or both of their implants at least every 10 years, and consult with a medical practitioner regularly to ensure that their implants aren’t leaking and are functioning correctly. If you have reason to believe that your implant has burst, moved out of position, or is contributing to other unexplained symptoms you may be experiencing, then be sure to consult with a medical practitioner promptly.

Breast implants are generally considered to reduce the effectiveness of traditional breast cancer screening as implants may conceal tumours during a mammogram. This can be mitigated by simply communicating to your screening specialist that you do have breast implants so that their breast cancer detection processes are amended to factor in your breast augmentation.

If you’ve undergone a double mastectomy and are looking to reconstruct your breasts, then a breast augmentation is likely to deliver the results you’re looking for. Breast augmentation procedures are also ideal for those looking to visually enhance their breasts or correct asymmetry or uneven breasts.

Breast augmentation procedures may produce scars caused by incisions as well as scar tissue surrounding your positioned breast implant. In most cases, scars caused by your breast augmentation procedure will fade over time.
