5 Common Eye Surgery Types

Eyelid surgery is a type of cosmetic surgery that aims to enhance the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids. There are five common types of eyelid surgeries that are performed to address different issues.

1. Upper Blepharoplasty

Aim to address drooping or sagging of the upper eyelids, this surgery not only restores a more youthful, alert appearance but also improves vision impairments caused by excess skin. The result is a refreshed, open eye contour that reflects your inner vitality.

2. Lower Blepharoplasty

Target under-eye bags, puffiness, and wrinkles. Lower blepharoplasty effectively reduces these common signs of aging or fatigue, enhancing the smoothness and clarity of the under-eye area, and diminishing dark circles for a rejuvenated look.

3. Bilateral Eyelid Surgery

Bilateral eyelid surgery, combines both upper and lower blepharoplasty techniques. This approach is to improve the appearance of both the upper and lower eyelids.

4. Double Eyelid Surgery

Popular among individuals with monolids or epicanthic folds, double eyelid surgery creates a natural-looking crease in the upper eyelid. This procedure enhances the eye shape.

5. Transconjunctival Eyelid Surgery

Focused on the lower eyelids, this less invasive technique is excellent for removing excess fatty deposits that contribute to under-eye bags.

Medicare may offer rebates for upper and lower eyelid surgeries deemed medically necessary. Patients with documented medical conditions that require blepharoplasty may qualify to have up to 75% of their procedure costs covered. Understanding what results you would ideally like from your blepharoplasty procedure can help your surgeon determine what treatment is most suitable for you. Being a surgical cosmetic procedure, clinicians will agree that blepharoplasties deliver permanent results in that the surgery will permanently alter the appearance of skin on the eyelids and around the eyes. However, patients will still experience natural signs of ageing even following their eyelid surgery, which is why blepharoplasty specialists are hesitant to recommend the procedure for younger candidates.

Blepharoplasty operations typically begin with your surgeon applying anaesthetic before then making precise incisions across or under the eyelid, depending on the type of eyelid surgery you’ll be undergoing. Once the incisions have been made, excess fatty tissue will then be surgically removed. Muscle tissue and skin may then be repositioned or tightened with sutures to effectively ‘pull up’ sagging or drooping eyelid skin. Once the muscle and skin tissue have been repositioned, your eyelid surgeon will then close up incisions with stitches, surgical tape, or tissue glue.

The recovery from Blepharoplasty varies from person to person. While initial results may be seen within weeks, full healing of incisions can take up to a year. During the first 2-3 weeks, it’s important to avoid eye trauma, take prescribed pain medication, and use cold compresses to reduce swelling. Protecting the eyes from sun exposure aids in the healing process. We highly recommend following your surgeon’s aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery. As is the case with any surgical procedure, eyelid surgery is accompanied by general surgical risks, as well as specific risks to the eyes and eyelids. Some of the risks that may be result from eyelid surgery include:

  • Bleeding, infection, inflammation, and other general risks of surgery
  • Allergic reactions to anaesthesia/sutures, etc.
  • Eyelid ptosis (abnormal positioning of eyelids)
  • Sunken eyes (if too much fatty tissue is removed during blepharoplasty)
  • Dry eyes, or difficulty closing eyes
  • Other eye conditions like lid lag, and ectropion
  • Temporarily blurred or impaired vision
  • Permanent or temporary vision loss (in some cases)
